Product Overview

Self-Extinguishing FR Plastic Compound

An inorganic-based thermoplastic specialty FR plastic compound that releases water vapor on fire contact and forms a protective alumina film, stopping the spread of fire on its own - a next-generation FR solution.

FlamEL® 4.0 is an inorganic thermoplastic specialty FR compound for extruded sheets, injection-molded parts, and most other thermoplastic products.

Parts made with FlamEL® 4.0 absorb heat, release water vapor, and form a protective alumina layer on fire contact, stopping spread and shielding the substrate.

Harmful gas released on fire contact is markedly lower, sharply reducing casualties in the fire compartment.

For extrusion, injection, and a wide range of plastic parts
Heat absorption, vapor release, protective skin: three-step control of fire spread
LOI up to 41% - self-extinguishing in air
Secures 60–80 s evacuation window in early fire stage

Recommended Processing

  • Sheet or roll (0.3 mm and up)
  • Direct bonding or adhesion to glass, fabric, and other substrates
  • Injection molding or thermoplastic processing

Available Forms

  • Plastic compound
  • Masterbatch for selected resins

FlamEL® 4.0 Applications

  • Battery cases and ECU modules for vehicles and electrical products
  • Distribution boards and heat-using appliances
  • Data-center equipment enclosures
  • Data-center fit-out (flooring, cladding, partition walls)
  • FR interiors for hazardous-goods storage and transport
  • FR cladding or protective sheet for steel and wood

Mechanism

FR action in a fire

  • FlamEL® 4.0 absorbs the heat of the fire
  • Aluminum hydroxide absorbs heat, decomposes, and releases water vapor
  • An alumina skin (Al₂O₃) forms on the surface
  • Fire spread is delayed and the substrate or part protects itself

FlamEL® 4.0 Fire-Suppression Process

  • Heat absorption: 1060 J/g (AH)
  • Water-vapor release ➔ suppresses fire spread
  • Alumina film formation ➔ heat barrier
  • Additional protection of the substrate
  • A 3 mm sheet releases 1,860 L of water vapor per 1 m²
  • Aluminum hydroxide thermal decomposition (from 220°C)

FlamEL® 4.0 Technical Features

  • Releases only water and CO₂ in a fire *
  • No dioxin emissions *
  • Absorbs surface heat to protect the substrate
  • REACH compliant; hazardous compounds not detected*

* Result of FlamEL® 4.0 burned alone
